Welcome to Hood River Valley Parks & Recreation!

District Overview

In 1988, voters approved creation of the Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District, which includes most of Hood River County.  The mission of the Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District is to provide recreational opportunities to the citizens of the District, with focus on the youth of our community.  Facilities and programs will be developed and maintained to provide safe and economical recreational environments for all users.  The District’s role has expanded from operating the Hood River Aquatic Center to meeting a variety of the community parks and recreational needs.

Currently, we provide for the recreational needs of the community through the following facilities:

Ř      Aquatic Center – In 1993 and 1995, the District updated the 1948 swimming pool to provide year-round aquatics for area residents and visitors.  An aesthetically pleasing and ADA compliant front entrance was added in 2001.

Ř      Skate Park – In 1996, working in cooperation with the City, the Hood River Rotary, other civic groups, and strong volunteer groups, the District opened the first phase of a skate park at the City’s Jaymar Park (now called the Rotary Skate Park).  Volunteers remain key as we continue to evolve the Skate Park to a permanent, low maintenance facility.  The skate park is also expanding to include a BMX track, permanent restrooms, and playground area.

Ř      Ball Fields – As early as 1991, a citizen advisory group for the District identified new sports facilities (i.e. ball/soccer fields) as a high priority need for the community.  In November 1997, voters approved a bond measure which included $1.2 million to provide new and upgraded sports fields and facilities at seven schools.  Due largely to a volunteer labor pool and donated equipment, $120,000 of additional improvements were funded from the bond.  Currently, the district is seeking to obtain an acreage for a ball field complex.

Ř      City/Small Parks – Working in cooperation with the City, the District is working on improving playground equipment at a number of city parks.  Culbertson Park, located in the Pacific Heights subdivision, was completed in 2003 and open space is provided in the Hazelview subdivision located at 1711 Heritage Loop.

Ř      Trails – The District is currently working on Indian Creek Trail, which, upon completion, will stretch from 2nd and Hazel Streets to the Hood River High School.  Segments 1 (from 2nd and Hazel Streets to 12th Street) and 3 (from HRV High School to Arrowhead Drive) have been completed and are open to the public.  Segment 3's two trailheads are located off Indian Creek Road at the West end of Hood River Valley High School parking lot and just South of the High School off of the ball fields parking lot.
